Welcome to the Butler Circulation Department, the central circulation point for the more than two million volumes housed in the Butler stacks and the Library Offsite Facilities. The staff at the circulation desk will be able to answer general questions about basic library services. We are also able to help you check out, renew and return library material, or to locate such material if you are unable to do so yourself.
The Butler Library Circulation Desk is located on the third floor of the building.
Butler Stacks houses 1.5 million volumes of the University’s collection in the humanities, history, literature, philosophy and religion. The eleven-level bookstack is open to all registered library users, and it can be entered from the third floor of the building near the main circulation desk, as well as from the fourth and sixth floors. You can locate the call numbers for Butler library material in CLIO, the Columbia Libraries’ online catalog, or in the Card Catalog.
Material in the stacks is arranged in call number order and can be retrieved and checked out at the main circulation desk. The loan period will be determined by your affiliation—student, faculty or officer, staff, or doctoral student. Some material may be shelved in restricted areas or offsite; place requests for these items at the main circulation desk. Some material may not circulate, and can be used within the library only.
The Butler Reserves Department operates its own circulation desk where items placed on reserve by professors, and material from the Butler Media collection may be checked out. Milstein Library material may be checked out from or returned to either desk. Items from the Reserve or Media collections may be returned only to the Butler Reserve desk.
If the material you are looking for is not on the shelf you may ask the staff at the circulation desk to determine if it has been checked out. If it has, a recall or hold can be placed; if it has not, a search for the missing item can be requested.
Material checked out from Butler Stacks can be renewed before the due date by list (at the circulation desk) or online from CLIO. Please also see the separate handout for details about renewals.
Material should be returned to the book return slot located on the third floor near the main circulation desk during regular hours or to the bookbins outside the building.
Failure to return or renew books on time will result in late fines or fees. The library does not send email notices until after the item has become overdue. Our failure to send an overdue notice or failure of delivery of the notices does not relieve you of responsibility for renewing or returning item on time.
Items checked out from Butler Library must be returned to the Butler Library. Fines for overdue material are $0.25 cents per day, with a maximum fine of $7.50 per overdue item. Fines accrue every calendar day an item is overdue whether or not the library is open that day. You may pay your fines with a check at any circulation desk, or by Visa or MasterCard at the Library Information Office. If an item checked out to you is lost you must report it immediately to stop further accumulation of overdue charges.
