Which libraries and collections at Columbia are participating in the program?
I am a Columbia graduate student. Am I eligible to apply?
You are welcome to apply but preference will be given to those outside the metropolitan area who need to travel to New York City to conduct their research.
I am not a US citizen and am currently enrolled in a doctoral program at a university outside the US. Columbia has important primary source material for my dissertation. Am I eligible to apply for a grant?
While you are welcome to visit Columbia and consult our collections, this program is only available to US citizens and to those who have a legal right to work in the US.
Will Columbia help me obtain a US visa to visit the Libraries?
Not through this program.
What may I use the award for?
There are no restrictions. However, it is expected that the award will be used to directly defer costs associated with visiting the Libraries to conduct research.
Will Columbia help me find housing in New York City during my visit?
Researchers are responsible for making their own travel and living arrangements. The Columbia Libraries website, however, does provide information that might be useful for planning purposes: Exploring New York City Guide.
Is the award taxable?
Successful applicants will be required to complete a Form W-9, which will be submitted to the government by Columbia for income reporting purposes.
Will I be required to attend any seminars or present any papers during my visit?
No. The purpose of this program is to facilitate the conduct of research. The only requirements of the award are a brief report at the conclusion of your project here summarizing your work and accounting for your expenses.
Will Columbia lend me a laptop to use during my visit?
No. Researchers should bring or purchase whatever tools they will need to complete their projects.
Will Columbia provide me with free copying services during my visit?
No, but the award can be used to defray all expenses associated with your visit.
