How do I check out library materials?

Question:

How do I check out library materials?

Answer:

The majority of Columbia libraries’ collections are accessible through open stacks.  Once you have established the material’s call number and shelf location through CLIO, you are free to enter the stacks and retrieve the material yourself.

Within the CLIO record, the location field identifies the holding library and the CLIO Location Guide provides the libraries’ addresses as well as library maps and floor plans.  Use the call number in conjunction with the maps, floor plans, and stacks and call number guides for the respective libraries to determine where the material is located.

The CLIO record will indicate if the material is non-circulating, off-site or restricted, in which case, see the circulation desk.

To borrow library materials you will need to present your Columbia University, Barnard College, Teachers College, or Union Theological Seminary ID card to the circulation desk.

If you have questions about your privileges, please contact the Library Information Office inside the front entrance of Butler Library (E-mail: lio@columbia.edu Telephone: 212-854-7309)  An ID card from Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, without an additional Columbia ID card, allows you to borrow only from the Health Sciences Library.

Circulation policies vary from library to library; please see the Circulation or Access Department at your respective library for complete details.
