How do I cite an online resource?

Question:

How do I cite an online resource?

Answer:

See The Columbia Guide to Online Style.  This and other citation style guides are available at the Butler Reference Desk and at the reference desks of many Columbia libraries.

Many of our databases give you the correct online citation within the record; for examples, see ProQuest and JSTOR.

The citation style you use in your bibliography depends on your subject. Your professor should let you know which citation style to use. The main bibliographic styles by subject are:

  • History: Chicago 15th
  • Humanities: MLA
  • Social Sciences: APA
  • Sciences: CSE

To learn more about using these styles see the The Bedford Handbook, 7th Edition: Research and Documentation Online page.
