What is a works cited page? What is a reference list? How do I format them?

Question:

What is a works cited page? What is a reference list? How do I format them?

Answer:

A reference list or works cited page is a list of sources directly cited in a paper.  The reference list should provide complete publication or access information on all cited works so that readers can seek out these sources on their own.

You can use bibliographic software tools like EndNote and RefWorks to create bibliographies.

The citation style you use in your bibliography depends on your subject. Your professor should let you know which citation style to use. The main bibliographic styles by subject are:

  • History: Chicago 15th
  • Humanities: MLA
  • Social Sciences: APA
  • Sciences: CSE

To learn more about using these styles see the The Bedford Handbook, 7th Edition: Research and Documentation Online page.
