Gustav Stickley (1858-1942)

This collection contains 1,163 primarily original drawings created by The Craftsman Architects, under the direction of Gustav Stickley, for houses published in Stickley's The Craftsman magazine and in later compilations between 1904 and 1915. These drawings were prepared for readers interested in building the designs and were offered through a membership in The Craftsman Homebuilders' Club, which was free to subscribers of The Craftsman.

Complementing the published designs are drawings for 16 privately commissioned houses across the United States--including homes in California, Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania. Some of these houses were adaptations of the published houses described above, while others appear to be unique designs.

The collection is completed by a small group of drawings by the Craftsman Architects for interior and exterior locks, latching, and door hardware, as well as a small group of schematic plan layouts for private houses using the Craftsman Fireplace-Furnace heating system.
