The National Imagery and Mapping Agency nautical charts and publications public sale booklets are useful for locating the chart numbers, and are located on the shelf beside the main entrance to the map room.
Nautical charts can then be found by numerical order in the nautical chart cabinets.
Nautical charts are produced for marine navigation. They contain information about navigational aids, and water depths are recorded as soundings measures in meters, feet or fathoms.
Nautical charts were designed for navigation and must be kept current with changes listed in the weekly Notice to Mariners in order remain accurate. Because the library does not make these changes, the charts may not be up to date.
We retain only the latest edition. Some historical charts are available online from NOAA's Historical Map & Chart Project.
Chart No. 1: Nautical Chart Symbols, Abbreviations, and Terms is a useful guide to the unique symbols found on nautical charts. It too is located on the shelf beside the main entrance to the map room (C 44.402:SY 6).
