Detailed Race and Hispanic Origin

Detailed Race is asked of persons identifying with only 3 of the basic race groups.

  • Asian
    Asian-Indian, Bangladeshi, Cambodian, Chinese, Chinese (except Taiwanese), Taiwanese, Filipino, Hmong, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Laotian, Malaysian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Thai, Vietnamese, other
  • Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islanders
    Native Hawaiian. Samoan, Tongan, Micronesian, Guamanian or Chamorro, Melanesian, Fijian, Other
  • American Indian and Native Alaskan
    Includes 70 tribes and 8 Alaskan races.
     

Detailed Hispanic origin is asked of for all persons who identify as Hispanic.

  • Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, Central American, Costa Rican, Guatemalan, Honduran, Nicaraguan, Panamanian, Salvadoran, South American, Argentinean, Bolivian, Chilean, Colombian, Ecuadorian, Paraguayan, Peruvian, Uruguayan, Venezuelan, Spaniard, other

Ancestry

Ancestry is asked only of those persons who do not report either detailed race or Hispanic Origin.

  • Persons self-classify according to the ancestry group or groups with which they most closely identify.
  • They can choose first and second ancestry.

  • If a person uses a religious affiliation for ancestry that response is grouped as "other."

Place of Birth

Place of birth is asked of all persons.  Census tables are generated for place of birth for foreign born.

Locating Indicators of Ethnicity

Totals for Basic Race and Hispanic Origin

  • On American Community Survey
    • In the 1, 3 and 5 year estimates files, totals for basic race are reported as follows:
      • in a single table based one the applicable basic race/Hispanic category,
      • topic-specific detailed tables and quick tables for each detailed race and Hispanic origin populations subgroup.
    • Using the use the Race and Ethnic Groups filter in AFF you can obtained tables for groups defined by basic from selected ACS datasets as follows.
      • In the ACS 1 and 3 year period estimates data products topic-specific detailed tables and quick tables are available for detailed basic and Hispanic origin populations.
      • In Selected Population Tables file (based on the 5 year estimates file), tables based by basic race, tribal and Hispanic Origin are groups are available. Totals include counts of one race or a race in combination with another. 
  • On Census Summary File 1, 2000 and 2010
    • Only totals for each detailed race and Hispanic origin are reported in the tables that detail specifics on race or Hispanic Origin in the in demographic profile table
  • On Census Summary File 2, 2000 and 2010
    • You can obtain all detailed tables, quick tables and the demographic profiles for each detailed race (either that race alone or in combination others) and Hispanic Origins.
    • You must use the use the Race and Ethnic Groups filter in AFF to obtain to these tables. 
  • On Census 2000 Summary File 3 (SF3 is available only in 2000)
    • Detailed race data is not available on 2000 SF3.
  • On Census 2000 Summary File 4 (SF4 is available only in 2000)
    • You can obtain all detailed tables, quick tables and the demographic profiles for each detailed race and Hispanic Origins.
    • You must use the use the Race and Ethnic Groups filter in AFF2 to obtain to get to these tables.

Totals for Detailed Race and Hispanic Origin

  • On American Community Survey
    • In the 1, 3 and 5 year estimates files, totals for detailed race are reported as follows:
      • in a single table based one the applicable basic race/Hispanic category,
      • topic-specific detailed tables and quick tables for each detailed race and Hispanic origin populations subgroup.
    • Using the use the Race and Ethnic Groups filter in AFF you can obtained tables for groups defined by detailed race from selected ACS datasets as follows.
      • In the ACS 1 and 3 year period estimates data products topic-specific detailed tables and quick tables are available for detailed race and Hispanic origin populations.
      • In Selected Population Tables  file (based on the 5 year 2010 estimates file) tables based detailed race and Hispanic Origin are for each detailed race alone or in combination with others. As well the American Indian and Alaska Native detailed race groups are reported in the separate dataset, American Indian and Alaska Native Tables.

  • On Census Summary File 1, 2000 and 2010
    • Only totals for each detailed race and Hispanic origin are reported in the tables that detail specifics on race or Hispanic Origin in the in demographic profile table
  • On Census Summary File 2, 2000 and 2010
    • You can obtain all detailed tables, quick tables and the demographic profiles for each detailed race (either that race alone or in combination others) and Hispanic Origins.
    • You must use the use the Race and Ethnic Groups filter in AFF to obtain to these tables. 
  • On Census 2000 Summary File 3 (SF3 is available only in 2000)
    • Detailed race data is not available on 2000 SF3.
  • On Census 2000 Summary File 4 (SF4 is available only in 2000)
    • You can obtain all detailed tables, quick tables and the demographic profiles for each detailed race and Hispanic Origins.
    • You must use the use the Race and Ethnic Groups filter in AFF2 to obtain to get to these tables.

Totals for Ancestry Data

  • On American Community Survey
    • On the 1, 3 and 5 year estimates files:
      • Population counts for each ancestry group are reported in two detailed tables: one for first reported ancestry and one for second reported ancestry.
      • The demographic profile table lists population totals for the most frequently reported ancestries.
    • Using the use the Race and Ethnic Groups filter in AFF you can obtained tables for ancestry groups from selected ACS datasets as follows.
      • On the ACS 1 and 3 year estimates file:
        • All topic-specific detailed tables and quick tables are available by first-reported ancestry. 
        • In Selected Population Tables file (based on the 5 year estimates file) tables for each of the ancestry groups are available

  • On Summary File 3 (SF3 is available only in 2000)
    • Population counts for each ancestry group are reported in two detailed tables: one for first reported ancestry and one for second reported ancestry.
    • The demographic profile table lists population totals for the most frequently reported ancestries.
  • On Summary File 4 (SF4 is available only in 2000)
    • You can obtain all detailed tables, quick tables and the demographic profiles for each first reported ancestry.
    • You must use the use the Race and Ethnic Groups filter in AFF2 to select the ancestry group for your tables.

Totals for Place of Birth of Foreign Born

Totas counts for all foreign born are reported on profile tables and broad Place of Birth tables. Details on those who were born in a foreign country are listed various Place of Birth - foreign born tables.

  • On American Community Survey
    • Population counts by place of birth for foreign are reported in two tables: one for the full list of countries and one with totals for the most frequently reported countries with a region and regional totals for countries not listed.
    • Topic-specific detailed tables and quick tables are available by country of birth. You must use the use the Race and Ethnic Groups filter in AFF2 to obtain to get to these tables. Such tables are available only in the ACS 1 and 3 year period estimates data products.
  • On Summary File 3 (SF3 is available only in 2000)
    • Population counts by country of birth are reported in a detailed.  A quick table gives totals for the most frequently reported countries with a region and regional totals for countries not listed.
  • On Summary File 4 (SF4 is available only in 2000)
    • No country-specific place of birth counts are reported on SF4.
