C.V. Starr East Asian Library, Columbia University, in partnership with Columbia Confucius Institute, Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, and Weatherhead East Asian Institute, and School of the Arts at Remin University of China will host Wang Mansheng & Zheng Xiaohua Chinese Calligraphy Exhibition and Symposium 王满晟、郑晓华中国书法展暨研讨会, Oct.-Dec. 2014.

Introduction of Artists

Mr. Wang Mansheng Mr. Wang Mansheng

Wang Mansheng was born in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, in December 1962.  Following graduation in 1985 from the Chinese Department of Shanghai’s Fudan University, where he majored in classical literature, he worked for over a decade as an editor, director and producer at China Central Television in Beijing.  He has devoted himself full time to painting and calligraphy since his move to New York in 1996.  Influenced by his training and interest in the Chinese classics, his paintings often reflect on the landscapes and images of China’s past.  Wang’s calligraphy and paintings have been shown at galleries and museums in China, including exhibitions at the Beijing Art Museum and Today Art Museum in Beijing, Xuhui Art Museum in Shanghai and Shanxi Museum in Taiyuan and, in New York, at the Godwin-Ternbach Museum, Rockefeller Brothers Fund and China Institute in America.  Wang has lectured and given demonstrations on Chinese art and culture at universities and museums, including at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  His pieces are held in museum and private collections. Representative works include White Lotus Series, Buddhist Figures Series, Cultivating Spirit Series, and Ancient Pine Series.

王满晟,1962年12月出生于山西省太原市。1985年从上海 复旦大学中文系毕业,专修古典文学。以后十余年在北京中央电视台任编辑导演和制片人。1996年移居纽约后,全身心致力于绘画和书法艺术研究和创作。深受在古典文学方面的训练与志趣的影响, 其绘画作品常常表现怀古幽情。王的书法绘画作品曾多次在中美的画廊和博物馆展出:包括北京艺术博物馆,今日美术馆,上海徐汇 艺术馆, 山西博物院,和纽约的 Godwin-Ternbach 博物馆、 洛克菲勒兄弟基金以及华美协进社等。王曾在大都会等一些博物馆及许 多大学作关于中国艺术和文化的演讲和示范。多幅作品被博物馆及私人收藏。代表作有:《白莲系列》《佛造像系列》《以养吾气系列》 《水墨古松系列》。

Prof. Zheng Xiaohua Prof. Zheng Xiaohua

Zheng Xiaohua is a calligrapher who lives in Beijing and teaches Chinese calligraphy in the Academy of Arts, Renmin University of China.

He is the first Ph.D. graduate in the field of calligraphy in China. He has studied and practiced Chinese calligraphy for more than thirty years. He has published several collections and academic books about Chinese calligraphy. He has had many one-person or group exhibitions in museums and galleries both in China and abroad, including Japan, South Korean, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Israel, New Jersey, University of Michigan, and Georgetown University. He is the recipient of a number of national awards from different academic institutes, including the top national prize for young artists in China.

He has been a professor and Deputy Dean in the Academy of Arts in Renmin University of China from 2002. His main academic and research interest lies in ink painting, Chinese calligraphy, and theories of Chinese art. He is also the co-founder and director of the Institution of Oriental Art in Renmin University. He serves as a board member and the secretary-general of the academic committee in Chinese Calligraphers Association. He is the directer of the International Calligraphy Education Foundation in Renmin University.

郑晓华,1963年出生于浙江缙云。1983年毕业于中国人民大学历史系,毕业后留校任教。1995年考入首都师范大学书法研究所,师从书坛耆宿欧阳中石教授,攻读书学博士学位。1998年毕业获博士学位,为我国首届书法专业博士学位获得者。

自幼爱好书法,研究临池30余年,兼善各体,尤精意于行书和隶书。行书从“二王”入手,兼取宋代米芾和明清之际的王铎,风格优雅俊逸。隶书以“汉碑”为基础,吸收汉简和楚简的笔法,融入大小篆字形,略参行草笔意,形成古朴雄健的风格,在当代中国书坛自成一家。

现任中国人民大学艺术学院副院长、中国人民大学东方艺术研究所所长、博士生导师。入选“北京市新世纪百人工程”、“北京市文艺人才百人工程”,为国务院政府特殊津贴专家、教育部艺术学专业教育委员会委员、第九届全国青联委员、中国书协理事、学术委员会秘书长。2006年、2010年,两度入选“中国书法十大年度人物”。2007年荣膺第二届“全国中青年德艺双馨文艺工作者”称号。2011年入选“全国宣传文化系统‘四个一批’人才”。

作品多次参加国内外展览,并被人民大会堂、中国美术馆、中央电视台等机构收藏。著有: 《大师——影响中国书法发展的二十位历史人物》(北京)、《书谱》(北京)、《艺路鸿影--郑晓华书法集》(天津)、《中国历代书法—影响中国书法发展的20位历史人物》(北京)、《颜筋柳骨》(上海)、《中国书法史话》(上海)、《翰逸神飞--书法艺术的历史与审美》(北京)、《古典书学浅探》(北京)、《书法艺术欣赏》(台北)、《艺术概论》(台北)等。
