Film Screening and Discussion: Minority Media in Taiwan, September 28, 2017
This program includes a film screening Children of the Sun (Panay, 2015, Taiwan) and a panel discussion on indigenous and minority media practice in Taiwan. It is co-sponsored by the Taipei Cultural Center of TECO in New York, Columbia's Weatherhead East Asian Institute and the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, and the C.V. Starr East Asian Library.
Wawa No Cidal (Children of the Sun) (Panay, 2015, running time 99min) is a feature film directed by Cheng Yu-Chieh and Lekal Sumi Cilangasan. The film tells the story of an indigenous woman journalist named Panay, who becomes concerned with her hometwon’s rapid transformations due to over-development and tourism, and returns home to seek ways to improve the situation. In the process, she not only renews her ties with the land and the people, but also begins to understand her changing identity.
The film was awarded the Audience Choice Award from the Taipei Film Festival, and has been screened in various international film festivals.
The screening will be followed by lecture and discussion with two scholars from Taiwan, Professors Robert Chen (National Chengchi University) and Chun-chi Wang (National Dong Hwa University) on minority representations and voices in post-martial law Taiwan cinema and on contestations over directions of development.

Speakers
Ru-Shou Robert Chen is Professor of the Department of Radio-TV, National Chengchi University. His recent publication includes Cinema Taiwan: Politics, Popularity and State of the Arts. His research interests are Taiwan cinema, film theory, everyday life sociology, and Walter Benjamin.
Chun-Chi Wang is Associate Professor of English Department, National Dong Hwa University. She received her Ph.D. in Critical Studies from the School of Cinematic Arts at University of Southern California. Her articles have appeared in several academic journals and anthology books. Her research areas include taiyu pian and the history of Taiwan cinema; gender and sexuality in cinema; community-based participatory media-making.
