Natural Earth is a public domain map dataset available at 1:10m, 1:50m, and 1:110 million scales. Featuring tightly integrated vector and raster data, with Natural Earth you can make a variety of visually pleasing, well-crafted maps with cartography or GIS software.

Managed by the USGS National Geospatial Program (NGP), users can access data from all eight primary data themes of The National Map, and products, such as Elevation, Orthoimagery, Land Cover, Hydrography, Geographic Names, Boundaries, Transportation & Structures. 

The National Historical Geographic Information System (NHGIS) provides, free of charge, aggregate census data and GIS-compatible boundary files for the United States between 1790 and 2013.

This server has data extracts from the OpenStreetMap project which are normally updated every day, in shapefile & OSM formats.
