Bibliography Week Kicks Off at Columbia University Libraries with Annual Lecture

NEW YORK, January 20, 2010 –

The Columbia University Rare Book & Manuscript Library will host the 16th Annual Bibliography Week Lecture next week featuring Michael Suarez, S.J., book historian and recently-appointed director of Rare Book School. His talk, scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, January 26 in the Faculty Room of Low Library (116th St. at Broadway), is titled "Learned Virtuosity, Virtuously Displayed: Cultural Elites and Deep Purses in Restoration and 18th-Century Illustrated English Books." The talk is free and open to the public.


Since 1995, the Rare Book & Manuscript Library has presented its annual lecture during Bibliography Week, when the principal national organizations devoted to book history have their annual meetings in New York. The series explores topics in a wide variety of related fields including calligraphy, paper, type design, printing, illustration and book binding.

Michael F. Suarez, S.J. is Director of Rare Book School, Professor of English, University Professor, and Honorary Curator of Special Collections at the University of Virginia. A Jesuit priest, he holds four masters degrees (two each in English and theology) and a D.Phil. in English from Oxford.
