William Bowen to Speak at Columbia on "Crossing the Finish Line"

NEW YORK, March 10, 2010 –

The Friends of the Columbia Libraries are pleased to sponsor a lecture by William G. Bowen, President Emeritus of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and Princeton University, on the determinants of graduation rates at public universities--and what might be done to improve them. The lecture will take place Wednesday, March 24, at 4:00 p.m. at Social Hall, Union Theological Seminary, 3041 Broadway at 121st Street, and is free and open to the public.


This lecture is the second of three in the Future of the Research University Speaker Series. William Bowen will address topics from his new publication, Crossing the Finish Line: Completing College at America's Public Universities (Princeton University Press, 2009), co-authored with Matthew M. Chingos and Michael S. McPherson.

Bowen was President of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation from 1988-2006 and President of Princeton University from 1972-1988, where he also served as Professor of Economics and Public Affairs. A graduate of Denison University (AB 1955) and Princeton University (PhD 1958), he joined the Princeton faculty in 1958 (specializing in labor economics) and served as Provost there from 1967-72. Bowen is the author or co-author of more than 20 books.
