Edwin Armstrong at Columbia: From Student to Radio Pioneer

NEW YORK, November 8, 2010 –

The Friends of the Columbia Libraries are pleased to host a lecture by Mischa Schwartz, Charles Batchelor Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering at Columbia University, who will discuss the fascinating history of Edwin Armstrong, inventor of FM radio. The event, "Edwin Armstrong at Columbia: From Student to Radio Pioneer," will take place on Tuesday, November 16 at 6:00 p.m. at Interschool Lab, 750 Schapiro Center (530 West 120th Street) on Columbia University's Morningside Campus, and is free and open to the public.

Edwin Armstrong (1890–1954) is primarily known as the inventor of FM radio. A Columbian and a pioneer in radio communications, his papers are housed in the Rare Book & Manuscript Library. Thanks to the efforts of Mischa Schwartz, and a grant from the IEEE Foundation, they were (as of 2010) being processed to make them more accessible to future scholars.

Mischa Schwartz joined Columbia in 1974. During his tenure he also spent time with IBM research, working in the field of wireless communication systems. He is a life fellow and former director of the IEEE. Schwartz is the author of nine books and more than 170 technical publications on communication theory and systems, signal processing and computer communication networks.
