Columbia University Libraries Presents Cinema China, Culture China: A Chinese Film and Culture Festival

NEW YORK, October 12, 2011 –

Columbia University Libraries and Lincoln Center are pleased to present Cinema China, Culture China, a five-day festival running October 17 through October 22, celebrating the relationship between the United States and China through cinematic and cultural perspectives.


The festival commemorates two majors donations the Libraries has received: an extensive collection of Chinese DVDs from Beauty Media Inc., a gift that transformed the Chinese film collection at Columbia into the largest in the world of research libraries and a large calligraphic work by world-renowned artist Xu Bing.

"The festival has attracted many of the top Chinese Film Studies scholars and graduate students in the world," Jim Cheng, Director of the C.V. Starr East Asian Library, said. "They will join Columbia faculty and students in conferences, panel discussions and film screenings.  I envision this unprecedented festival setting the stage for Columbia University Libraries to become a the primary resource center for Chinese and East Asian film studies in the years to come."

The eight films being screened at Lincoln Center include The Founding of a Republic, Ocean Heaven, The Blue Knight, Crazy Racer, The Piano in a Factory, Eternal Moment, Flower, and Bodyguards and Assassins.  Discount tickets will be available for those with a Columbia University ID.

In addition to film screenings, there will also be an array of cultural exhibitions, performances, and panel discussions taking place at Columbia University throughout the week. 

  • The Tianjin Youth Peking Opera Troupe will perform in Roone Arledge Auditorium in Lerner Hall on Tuesday, October 18 at 7:30pm. 
  • Contemporary Chinese musicians, Askar Graywolf Band, will perform in Low Library Plaza on Friday, October 21 at 7:00pm.
  • A demonstration of paper-cutting by paper-cut masters Xi Xiaoqin and Shi Qinling will happen daily on the 3rd floor of Butler Library. 
  • There will also be a model exhibition of Fujian Hakka Tulou (Soil Houses) on display on the 4th floor of Avery Hall.

Various panel discussions and seminars will be held for faculty, students, and scholars, exploring the relationship between American and Chinese cinema. Panelists include Columbia Professors Richard Pena, Jane Gaines, Weihong Bao, and Jeffrey Johnson, renowned scholars Chen Xihem from Shanghai University, China, Laikwan Pang from Hong Kong University, Yingjin Zhang from University of California San Diego, Zhang Zhen from New York University, and many more.

Starr East Asian Library is one of the major collections for the study of East Asia in the United States, with over 900,000 volumes of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Tibetan, and Western language materials, as well as some holdings in Mongol and Manchu, and over 7,280 periodical titles.
