Faculty Document Delivery Service


The Faculty Document Delivery Service enables Morningside/Barnard/UTS faculty and visiting scholars to request electronic delivery of articles and book chapters from the general print collections of the following participating libraries:

  • Avery Architectural & Fine Arts Library
  • The Burke Library at Union Theological Seminary
  • Business & Economics Library (Watson)
  • Butler Library
  • East Asian Library (Starr)
  • Engineering Library (Monell)
  • Geology Library
  • Journalism Library
  • Lehman Social Sciences Library
  • Mathematics Library
  • Milstein Undergraduate Library
  • Science & Engineering Library
  • Social Work Library

Eligible Users

  • Morningside/Barnard/Union Theological Seminary faculty and visiting scholars with library borrowing privileges.
  • The Faculty Document Delivery Service does not support proxy borrowing.
  • Students and staff with library borrowing privileges can use Interlibrary Loan to request articles not available at the Columbia Libraries.

Service Guidelines

  • Book chapters and articles from the general print collections.
  • Requested items must be for private study and individual research only.
  • Items in reference and reserve collections, Avery Classics, Avery Drawings & Archives, Rare Books and Manuscripts Library, University Archives, and the Oral History collection are not eligible for Document Delivery.
  • Limit of one chapter per book and one article per journal issue, within fair use guidelines.
  • Requests for fragile, tightly bound, or not on shelf/missing items may be resubmitted as regular ILL requests, on the patron's behalf, by ILL staff.

Delivery

  • Materials are delivered electronically to a faculty member's ILL account within 2-3 business days.
  • Faculty will be notified via e-mail when the article or chapter is ready to view. There is no rush service or hard-copy delivery service available.
  • Articles or chapters will be available in the patron's ILL account under "Electronically Delivered Articles" for 30 days.

How to Place a Faculty Document Delivery Service Request

  1. In CLIO, the Columbia Libraries catalog, locate the book or journal from which you need a copy.
  2. Click on the “Document Delivery” under “Place Request.” Select “Morningside/Barnard/Union Theological Seminary” to log into your ILL account. Alternatively, you can request an item directly by logging into your ILL account and choosing either “Article” or “Book Chapter” under “New Request (Faculty Document Delivery).
  3. Fill out the request form completely.
  4. Click the copyright acknowledgment.
  5. Submit the request.  Make a note of the transaction number (TN).  You will need this to track the progress of the request and for any additional follow-up.

Viewing a Faculty Document Delivery Request

Your requested item will be delivered electronically to your ILL account within 2-3 business days from time of request.  You will receive an e-mail notifying you when the item is available.

  1. Log in to your ILL account.
  2. Select "Electronically Received Articles" under the View menu.
