Social Work

A. Purpose and Program Description

The Libraries seek to support the teaching and research activities of the School of Social Work. The School offers programs of instruction at the Master's and Doctoral degree levels. User groups include graduate students, Ph.D. students, faculty, post-docs, researchers, and alumni.

Areas of established specialization are child welfare, community organization, criminal justice, family interaction, gerontology, industrial social work, international social welfare, marriage and divorce, mental health, poverty, social policy, social work, social welfare history, substance abuse rehabilitation, and therapies.

B. General Selection Guidelines (see classed analysis for detailed statement)

Overall, the Libraries’ existing collection, its current acquisitions commitment, based upon available resources, and its collecting goal for Social Work are all at the research level.

C. Specific Delimitations

  1. Formats collected: We collect monographs, reference tools and periodicals extensively, audio-visual materials, electronic tools, and scholarly series selectively.
  2. Imprint Dates Collected: We collect current publications and twentieth-century materials extensively, and nineteenth-century materials very selectively.
  3. Chronological Focus: We collect materials focusing on current research topics and twentieth-century topics extensively and nineteenth-century topics selectively.
  4. Languages Collected: We collect English language materials extensively; Western European languages very selectively; non-Western languages are excluded.
  5. Place of Publication: We collect United States imprints extensively and materials published in Great Britain, Western Europe, Canada, and Latin America selectively.
