You may renew most items from the Butler Stacks and the Milstein Collection up to 10 times from the original check-out date, unless another borrower has requested them, an instructor needs them for reserves, or your borrowing privileges are suspended. Please return or renew items promptly to avoid fines and fees.

As a courtesy to our users, there are renewal services that allow you to renew items without having to bring them physically to the Library. These are listed below. You must request these services on or before the current due date of the items you have checked out.

If you cannot renew an item using the methods below, please bring it to the Library to be renewed. You may be subject to fines or fees if you do not take appropriate action to renew items currently checked out to you on or before the due date. Contact the library staff if you have any questions about the status of items currently checked out to you.

Columbia students, faculty, staff and visiting scholars who have purchased borrowing privileges may also use Interlibrary Loan or Borrow Direct to request materials from other libraries.

Electronic Renewal Request

You may renew your books online from CLIO. This service is available to all registered borrowers who have a currently valid University Network ID ("UNI") and password. If you do not know your UNI, or need to create or activate it, please visit the CUIT myUNI page for more information.

List Renewal

Items you have checked out from Butler Library may be renewed in this manner as long as they have not been billed as lost, or do not have a recall or hold. Most items may be renewed ten times. To renew items in this manner, please present your valid Columbia University ID, or Library borrowing card, to the Circulation Desk staff and request that your books be renewed.

You will receive a list of the items renewed confirming the renewal process, and indicating the new due date. This printout will be your renewal confirmation. We suggest you keep this for your records.  You may also check the status of items you have checked out to you from the "My Library Account" link in CLIO.

Please note that the library is not responsible for items not renewed or not included in the renewal printout, such as items checked out from other libraries.
