Mark Tucker Collection Finding Aid

I. The Finding Aid

This finding aid identifies the documents contained in the Mark Tucker Collection given to the Music & Arts Library at Columbia University.  The documents are contained in folders organized numerically, and indexed alphabetically by category.

For access to these materials, contact a librarian at the Music & Arts Library in 701 Dodge Hall.

II. Organizational Scheme

  1. Numeric Listing: This list identifies the folders as they are filed sequentially from 1 – 163.  Each entry contains the author, folder title, contents, and assigned category.  These headings are described as follows:
    • Author: The Author heading refers to the writer or composer of the folder’s documents.  When the writer or composer of a document is not clear, or if the folder contains multiple documents from a variety of writers or composers, then the heading will reflect the person to whom the documents refer.
    • Folder Title: This heading refers to the content of the documents.  In most cases, titles were provided by Mark Tucker.  If folder names were missing or ambiguous, they have been clarified with additional information.
    • Contents: Itemized description.
    • Category: M. Musician Documents; R. Reference Documents; S. Scores and Transcriptions; T. Tucker Documents (See full category description below).

      For example:
Author: Duke Ellington; Folder Title: 1933 Scrapbook; Contents: Articles on DE and his band from 1933.  4 documents; Category: M.

  2. Category Listing: This list provides an index to the folders according to an alphabetic code assigned to each entry. Under each code, arrangement is by author, with sub-arrangement by folder title.  At the end of each entry a folder number is provided corresponding to the order in which the folders appear in the Numeric Listing.  These headings are described as follows:
    • Category: Indicated by an alphabetic code corresponding to the following four categories:
      • M.  Musician Documents:
Includes articles, musical programs, song lists, scrapbooks, personal correspondences, lyrics, photos, etc., pertaining to the specified musician or musicians.
