Using the Libraries

As a vital and dynamic partner for Columbia University, it is our foremost priority to enable world-class teaching, learning, and research by Columbia faculty, students, researchers, and staff.  To best fulfill this mission, access and borrowing restrictions are in place for most of our facilities and collections and are dependant on your affiliation with Columbia.  Please use the Library Privileges Table to determine eligibility for library services. 

Columbia faculty, students and staff must present a Columbia ID upon entering library facilities.  Members of affiliated institutions such as Barnard College, Teacher's College, and Union Theological Seminary must present a valid ID from relevant school. 

Columbia welcomes the use of its collections by guest researchers and scholars, as well as members of certain partner organizations. Non-affliates may be responsible for a visitor privilege fee. For more information about privileges for visitors and partner organizations, please visit the Visitor page. 

Contact the Library Information Office for questions about privileges or to arrange visitor access, located to the left of the Butler Library entrance. The Office has more limited hours than the library, so please check office hours before arriving at Columbia.
