Linked Data and Libraries: Modeling Metadata for the [Semantic] Web
Speaker

Description
In the past few years, the linked data design pattern [1] has been gaining momentum as a technique for data exchange on the web. This trend is also becoming of interest to the library world. Built on the technical underpinnings of the Web - particularly HTTP and descriptive standards like RDF - linked data has begun to realize the decade old vision of the Semantic Web. This talk will introduce the history and underlying principles of the Semantic Web, the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI), and Linked Data and will include demonstrations of a variety of emerging linked data applications and data sources from a variety of domains. Particular attention will be paid to principles of data modeling and decisions being made as communities come to agreement on best practices for linked data. Additionally, application of this pattern to the data and systems of libraries, museums and archives will be explored. Ongoing efforts to bring DCMI and World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards into better alignment will be discussed, as will efforts within both the DCMI [2] and W3C [3] to collaborate with the library technology community and the developers of RDA to better represent library data within this emerging ecosystem.
