Description
CUL's Mellon Project on Web Resources Collection Program Development has captured over 300 websites in its Human Rights Web Archive, while developing other collections sponsored by the Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library and the Burke Theological Library and exploring the archiving of Columbia University websites.
In this presentation, the speakers will briefly describe the project plan as a prelude to situating our efforts within the context of web archiving activity worldwide and then drilling down for a close-up of the mechanics of capturing websites. Alex Thurman will provide a survey of significant existing web archiving organizations, initiatives, use cases and access portals, and conclude with a look at the growing web archive collections at CUL. Tessa Fallon will analyze the structure of some specific websites and the technical challenges involved in archiving them, demonstrating web archiving tools ranging from powerful multi-faceted web archiving services to more accessible tools for individual users.
