Request Failures: Wrong ILL Mechanism
Two separate request mechanisms are used for ILL requests: Morningside (307 Butler) and HSL. Failures here are related to default delivery location.
This type of request failure is very rare.
Originally there was only one ILL request mechanism. A second was set up for HSL staff in January 2009. At that time HSL began transferrring large numbers of serials to ReCAP. It became apparent that a unique Ariel IP address was needed, thus a new request mechanism was created for HSL ILL.
Morningside ILL mechanism automatically sets the default delivery location to CI. HSL ILL mechanism automatically sets the default delivery location to HS.
Stop code CI likely was not assigned for customer code HR as a precaution to prevent books from going out on physical loan. This type of request failure was a transient human error, corrected by improved labeling, staff training and an adjustment to the customer code table.
Rare Failure
Failures may result when HSL staff place ILL requests for collections owned by other departments.
Failure notice read: "Default Delivery Location Invalid"
HSL ILL mechanism automatically sets the default delivery location to HS. If the requested item is not deliverable to the HS stop code, a failure will result.
In this case, the request was for title Modern Hospital, owned by Avery Library. The request fails because customer code AR is not deliverable to location HS.
A mediated request can be submitted to resolve the failure.
Obsolete Failure
Failures resulted when HSL staff used the Morningside ILL request mechanism.
Failure notice read: "Default Delivery Location Invalid"
The Morningside ILL mechanism automatically set the default delivery location to CI. At that time customer code HR was not authorized to be delivered to CI (HS was authorized).
In consultation with HSL staff, CI was added as a valid stop code for HR in the customer code table. In December 2009, the two mechanisms were given explicitly different names to distinguish between them.
