Lhasa Neighborhood Committee Number Three Records
The Lhasa Neighborhood Committee Three records document the demographic surveys, policies and political campaigns implemented during the transition to direct Chinese Communist rule in Lhasa from 1959 through 1976.
Series 1 is comprised entirely of handwritten materials, the majority of which were housed in envelopes labeled with a resident's name and address. Gathered for the purpose of implementing "Democratic Reforms" (dmangs gtso bcos 'gyur), these documents include personal statements about the 1959 Lhasa uprising, registers of people, property and weapons. These primary sources address the confiscation of weapons during and after the uprising, the transition in local administration, and the creation of sub-committees under the local neighborhood committee. The statements and registers record the name, address, class-standing, and other details for the residents or households surveyed.
Series 2 contains office files concerning the Anti-Panchen campaign and the activities of the Tibetan noble Lha smon Ye shes tshul khrims.
Series 3 concerns the Cultural Revolution period through the death of Mao in 1976, and is comprised primarily of personal files, which were compiled for each resident. The series also contains statements of grief and praise, written in commemoration of Chairman Mao.
Series 4 is comprised of public documents, including print and transcribed materials that were acquired with the collection and serve as further primary research materials for this tumultuous period in modern Tibetan history.
