Butler Library Locker Information

The Locker Lottery for the 2023-2024 academic year has closed.
Those selected will be notified via e-mail starting on September 19th, 2023.

Researchers may wish to use the day lockers located on the second floor to the left of the Information Desk. These lockers are for day use only. Locks must be removed at the end of each day. Locks left on these lockers will be removed between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m., and the contents of the lockers will be held in Lost and Found behind the Circulation Desk on the third floor. Columbia University is not responsible for the cost recovery of locks that have been clipped or items removed from lockers.

If you have questions about locker assignments, please e-mail butler_lockers@library.columbia.edu.

Lockers are assigned at the beginning of the academic year. To get a locker, you must enter the locker lottery.

Only one locker may be assigned to a person.

Only one submission for the lottery per student will be accepted; duplicate submissions will be discarded. Graduate student status will be verified for entry into the graduate student locker lottery. Lockers will be randomly assigned, no preferences considered.

All occupants must use a lock supplied by the Library. These locks are the property of the CU Libraries and may not be removed.  Students will be charged for loss, theft or damage to these locks. The replacement cost for each lock is $20.00.

Library staff will check lockers periodically to make sure that there are no library books stored in your locker which have not been checked out.  If books are found in your locker that have not been checked out, the books will be returned to the stacks.  In addition, you will forfeit your locker: it will be re-assigned to another student.

Locks may be cut at any time after the expiration of your registration. Any library property left in a locker will be returned to the library. Abandoned personal items will be brought to the lost and found area at the Butler Circulation Desk. Abandoned personal items may be reclaimed from the Butler Circulation Desk for 30 days from the date the lock was cut.

Locker users who do not clear their lockers before the end of the locker clearance deadline date will lose their locker privileges for a one-year period.

Lockers may not be altered permanently.

Columbia University Libraries is not liable for the loss, theft, or damage of material stored in lockers.
