The appointment of Winland, which followed a nationwide search for a director, was effective August 2009. “As former Director of the Social Science Libraries, Jane Winland brings a deep understanding of both the research and teaching needs of faculty and the learning needs of students,” said Damon Jaggars, Associate University Librarian for Collections & Services. “Her proactive service approach and deep administrative experience are a perfect fit for leading the division during this period of rapid change.”

Winland earned her BA in International Organizations and Administration from American University and her MS in Library Science from Catholic University. Since 1990 she was Director of the Social Science Libraries at Columbia University in addition to serving as Acting Director of the Science and Engineering Libraries since November of 2008. Winland led the Watson Library of Business and Economics at Columbia University from 1982-1990. She has served as chair of the Reference Coordinating Committee at Columbia University Libraries, and is a past member of the Advisory Councils for both Nylink and the Metropolitan New York Library Council.

“Working for so many years at Columbia University Libraries has been a great privilege, and I am glad that I can bring experience to the exciting and forward-looking projects that are in the future for the Science and Engineering Division,” said Winland.

As Director of the Science and Engineering Libraries, Winland oversees four libraries on the Morningside campus (Engineering, Geology, Integrated Science, and Mathematics) and a Geosciences Library at the Lamont Doherty campus and leads a staff of fifteen. A new Integrated Science Library, combining support for Astronomy, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology, designed by Rafael Moneo, will open in the Spring 2011.
