Master's Projects & Theses
The Columbia University Libraries maintains copies of projects, theses, and dissertations completed by students at the Columbia Journalism School.
M.S. Master’s Projects and M.A. Master’s Theses are available in print in the Journalism Library (most recent five years) and Lehman Social Sciences Library. Written projects and theses are compiled and bound twice annually: those completed for May graduations and those completed for August graduations (documentary and data students). Bound volumes are arranged chronologically by class year and alphabetically by author’s last name; M.S. projects (“Major Papers”) are bound in green covers and M.A. projects (“Master’s Theses”) are bound in red. Video documentary, audio, and other projects with a media component are maintained separately: Projects since 2015 are on USB drives in the Journalism Library, while projects from 1990-2015 are held in a variety of physical media in Lehman Library.
Ph.D. Dissertations in Communications are maintained separately. Dissertations are available in Academic Commons, Columbia’s institutional repository, beginning in 2011, and in ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global (a database available at Columbia and other libraries worldwide). Some dissertations are also held in print and/or microfilm formats and may be found by searching CLIO, the library catalog.

Current Columbia affiliates may read the print projects and theses in the library where they are held: the Journalism Library for recent projects and Lehman Library for older projects. Bound volumes do not circulate, and no scans or photos are permitted (notes are allowed). Use the index below to find the year and author’s name for specific projects.
Current Columbia affiliates may also request recent (since 2015) documentary and other projects with a media component at the Journalism Library circulation desk. These projects are available on USB drives and must be viewed in the library (a computer is available). Older video and audio projects are available, depending on format and condition; contact journalism@library.columbia with any requests.
Alumni may request a scan of their own written projects by emailing journalism@library.columbia with their name, graduation year, format, and project title. Note that requests for projects with audio, video, or other media components are governed by the Digitization & Copying Services policies and fees established by the Preservation Division of Columbia University Libraries.
Digitized copies of projects are only provided with the permission of the author (the copyright holder). Any researcher, whether a Columbia affiliate or not, seeking a digital copy of a project or thesis must obtain permission from the original author. The Libraries do not have contact information for former students.
