At the age of forty-three, on August 9, 1862, Thomas Colden Cooper enlisted with the 67th New York, 1st Long Island Volunteers. Two days later, Cooper was made full captain of his company and, later that year, captain of Company F, with which he served until he was killed in action at the Battle of the Wilderness on May 6, 1864.
