Descriptions of Electronic Resources for Chinese Studies
Resources marked with this symbol are restricted to Columbia affiliates.
In general, the minimum system requirements for using e-resources are Microsoft Windows 2000 or more advanced operating system and a recent version of Internet Explorer. Most e-resources may require the use of a computer in the Columbia University IP range, or a proxy connection. One may wish to consult the E-Resources FAQ or attend a library workshop to learn essentials applicable to using most e-resources and detailed guides for some leading English-langugae databases. But for Chinese-language e-resources, please feel free to ask Chinese Studies Librarian and attend the workshops organized at Starr East Asian Library.

- Apabi E-books Apabi 电子书 (E-book)
About 1,300 Apabi E-books have been acquired and made available. Apabi Reader is needed for viewing e-book contents. When you click on an e-book link for access, you will be prompted to download and install the reader. CLIO contains records of individual Apabi e-books.
- CHANT 漢達文庫 (Han Da Database)
Chinese Ancient Texts, or Han da wen ku, a product of Chinese University of Hong Kong. it includes five databases:
1. Oracle bone texts
2. Bronze inscriptions
3. Bamboo and silk texts
4. Extant Han and pre-Han (pre-220 AD) texts
5. Texts of Weijin and the Northern and Southern Dynasties (220-589 AD).
Click on 登入 (Log In), then click on 機構用戶 (Institutional Users) to access contents.
- Du xiu 读秀
As a search engine and an integrated platform of Superstar Digital Library, it includes digitized books, journals, newspapers, conference proceedings, theses and dissertations, patents and standards, and lecture videos. The search results link to either full-text contents or previews of the contents. The database may allow users to request document delivery for materials such as e-book pages/chapters or journal articles that the library has not acquired and to which it does not have direct full-text access.
- Gu jin tu shu ji cheng 古今圖書集成
Product via EastView. The Starr Library obtained the print book set in 10,000 juan as a gift from the Qing government to open the library over 100 years ago. The e-version is full-text searchable. Click on "IP 會員登入" (IP Users) for access. - Guba hua gong diao cha lu 古巴華工調查錄
A digitization project based on 6-volume set from our own print collection. Contains the original depositions of 279 Chinese indentured laborers in Cuba in its first four volumes (70, 75, 70, and 64 respectively) and related governmental treaties and documents in the last two volumes, revealing the unusual personal stories of forced immigration in the late 19th century. - Guo xue bao dian 国学宝典 new
Product of GXTPC (GuoXue Treasure Presentation China) Inc., Beijing. Columbia UNI/password login has to be used on and off campus for access. It is a searchable full text databases of a wide range of Chinese classical texts in several thousand titles. It is organized in traditional Chinese classification system of classics, history, philosophy and literature. More specific categories and special genres of literature, and even book titles, can be more easily seen in 目录浏览 in addition to basic and advanced searches. - Si bu cong kan 四部丛刊 new
Si bu cong kan, or Sibu congkan. An electronic version of the print Si bu cong kan, including searchable full texts and scanned images of 504 works in 3,134 volumes in the four branches of Chinese knowledge traditionally classified - jing (classics), shi (history), zi (philosophy), and ji (Belles-lettres). Compiled and photolithographed during the years 1919 to 1936 from the best editions in Chinese history, this series represents some of the best Chinese scholarly achievements. - Si ku quan shu 四庫全書
Wen yuan ge si ku quan shu, product of the Digital Heritage Publishing of Hong Kong. It includes 3,461 classic titles of the Wen yuan ge Si ku quan shu 文淵閣四庫全書, with features of full text, page image, and an embedded dictionary. Improved functions include enlarging content pages and images, horizontal and vertical print, and choices of "number of display result". Its 工具箱 (Toolbox) has useful tools such as 單字字義查詢 (Search by Chinese Single Character), 干支/公元換算 (Conversion between Chinese Lunar Years and A.D.), 古今紀年換算, 八卦•六十四卦表 (Eight/Sixty-four Diagrams in Chinese Mythology), and 關聯字查詢 (Search Engine for Chinese Relevant Words). Windows OS and Internet Explorer are required for accessing this resource.

Searchable full texts of the original print title in multiple volumes. Available only on Chinese workstation (EAXCDR03).
- Zhongguo fang zhi ku 中国方志库 new
It's an e-book collection and a searchable database of Chinese local gazetteers. The collection has 2,000 titles of rare and special edition local gazetteers printed in China from ancient time up to 1949. The concurrent user number is only one. The access steps:
1. click on the library resolve URL link, ignore the login and password on the right;

Database of Chinese Popular Literature is a collection of various genres of popular literature books in Chinese history in both full text and scanned image, ranging from vernacular novels, drama, to Buddhism "treasure scroll stories". The concurrent user number is only one. The access steps:

Chinese Cultural Revolution Database, product of Chinese University of Hong Kong based on the 2nd print edition of 2006. It contains historical materials related to Cultural Revolution, such as Chinese Communist Party documents, speeches and writings by major party leaders and media commentaries, about 10,000 documents in 35 million characters. Users can browse by subject categories and date. It is also searchable by author, keyword and organization. - Zhongguo wen shi zi liao ji cui (Wen shi zi liao ku) 中国文史资料集粹 (文史资料库)
A database of local history and culture materials, a product of Superstar Digital Library. It provides access to nearly 20,000 volumes of materials, the largest collection of wen shi zi liao materials. The contents are largely first-person narratives on local history and culture. It covers subjects of economics, politics, literature, ethnic minorities and many others from the late Qing Dynasty to the present day. Almost all Chinese counties, prefectures and provinces are represented in the collection. - Zhong yang yan jiu yuan Han ji dian zi wen xian 中央硏究院漢籍電子文獻, 漢籍全文資料庫 Scripta Sinica
Also called Scripta Sinica 瀚典, product of Academia Sinica, Taiwan. The public portion is free online; full access to the whole databases has been acquired through an exchange project with the Academia Sinica. The most wanted 史語所漢籍全文資料庫 (a full-text database) is fully accessible and full-text searchable. Please click on the button of 授權使用 (Authorized Use) for access. Its 工具箱 (Toolbox) has the useful tool 兩千年中西曆轉換 (Chinese and Western Calendar Conversion within Two Thousand Years).

- Century Journals Project (First Phase & Expanded) 世纪期刊全文数据库
CJP, or Shi ji qi kan, product of Tsinghua-TongFang via EastView; together with China Academic Journals (CAJ). CJP contains the allegedly most important scholarly journals published in China from the very first issue up to 1993. The CJP First Phase and CJP Expanded cover about 1,300 titles in humanities and social sciences. By using CJP and CAJ, Columbia users may find it unnecessary to request journals from offsite. - CEPS (Chinese Electronic Periodical Services) 中文電子期刊
A product of Taiwan-based Airiti Inc., it covers about 1,600 journals in humanities and social sciences from the Greater China Area. It also covers hundreds of journals in the sciences. - China Academic Journals 中国学术期刊全文数据库
CAJ, or Zhongguo xue shu qi kan quan wen shu ju ku, a product of Tsinghua-TongFang via EastView. Covers thousands of journals in humanities and social sciences; from 1994; full text in both PDF and CAJ viewer. The new CAJ interface integrates Century Journals Project databases (First Phase & Expanded), which covers journals from the earliest issue through 1993. The CAJ database has English abstracts for most articles, so searches may be conducted in English. - Du xiu 读秀

Covers most issues, 1931-1937; Features Columbia's collection of Ling long magazine, one of the most comprehensive holdings outside China. It is the result of a meticulous digitization project over many years. - TEPS (Taiwan Electronic Periodical Services) 台灣電子期刊
It includes about 500 scholarly journals of Taiwan; half of them are in humanities and social sciences. TEPS also includes hundreds of science journals. - Wanfang Data 万方数据 new

- Zhongguo wen shi zi liao ji cui (Wen shi zi liao ku) 中国文史资料集粹 (文史资料库)
Wen shi zi liao ku, a database of local history and culture materials, a product of Superstar Digital Library. It provides access to nearly 20,000 volumes of materials, the largest collection of wen shi zi liao materials. The contents are largely first-person narratives on local history and culture. It covers subjects of economics, politics, literature, ethnic minorities and many others from the late Qing Dynasty to the present day. Almost all Chinese counties, prefectures and provinces are represented in the collection.

CCND, or Zhongguo zhong yao bao zhi quan wen shu ju ku, a product of Tsinghua-TongFang via EastView, it covers hundreds of newspapers in humanities, social sciences, law, public health, etc.; from 2000; with full text in both PDF and CAJ viewer. Users should note that not all articles of a covered newspaper title are available in the database.

People's Daily digital archives, 1946-two years ago; product via TwinBridge; in both full text and newspaper PDF image. RefWorks has been activated. - Shen bao (Shun pao) 申报, 1872-1949 new
The Shanghai-based Shen bao (Shun pao) was the longest-lasting newspaper in modern China from the lat Qing Dynasty through the Republican peiod.
- Taiwan ri ri xin bao (Taiwan nichinichi shinpo) 臺灣日日新報 new
The Chinese edition, Kanbun Taiwan nichinichi shinpō 漢文臺灣日日新報, covers Meiji 38-nen shichi-gatsu tsuitachi [July 1, 1905]-Meiji 44-nen jūichi-gatsu sanjū-nichi [Nov. 30, 1911]. - Xin wen zhi shi ku 新聞知識庫 -- 台灣報紙 Newspapers in Taiwan
A newspaper database via TTS Group of Taiwan. It includes 14 important newspapers such as Zhongguo shi bao, Lian he bao, Zhong yang ri bao in full-text or scanned images or lead sentences, many from the earliest issues.

A product from Prof. Charles Muller of Toyo Gakuen University, it also includes the CJKV-English Dictionary, and the Dictionary of Chinese Buddhist Terms by Soothill and Hodous.

A title of Apabi Digital References Resource based on the print edition published by Shanghai ci shu chu ban she (上海辞书出版社), it includes 17,523 single characters and 6129 traditional and modified characters.

A title of Apabi Digital References Resource based on the print edition published by Han yu da ci dian chu ban she (汉语大词典出版社). It consists of 12 volumes, 375,000 characters and phrases, 2253 images, and 1 one index volume.
- Quan guo bao kan suo yin 全国报刊索引数据库
National Index of Chinese Newspapers & Periodicals, a bibliographic index (not full-text) of Chinese newspapers & periodicals from 1833 to current; product of Shanghai Library. Click on 数据库检索(Database Search) for access. If a needed article cannot be found in the print or e-resource collections at Columbia or other North American libraries, the article can be delivered from Shanghai Library. Please contact library staff member Ms. Sherry Pu to request document delivery. Due to budget cuts, the requests have to be very selective.
- Taiwan qi kan lun wen suo yin 臺灣期刊論文索引系統
Previously known as Zhonghua min guo qi kan lun wen suo yin (中華民國期刊論文索引). Index to Chinese Periodical Literature of Taiwan. The citation database includes nearly 5,000 periodicals in Chinese and Western languages published in Taiwan from 1970 to current. Some journals from Hong Kong and Macao are also included. It is not a full-text database, although a limited number of full-text articles are available. Because of reasons on Taiwanese part, the document delivery service has been discontinued since January 1, 2010. - Zhongguo li dai dian ji zong mu: Historical book catalogue of China 中國歷代典籍總目 new
Assembles entries of historical Chinese titles (pre-1949) from different catalogues for the purpose of checking and analyzing edition information. Columbia's early Chinese genealogical records are included.

- ChinaLawInfo 北大法律信息网
Also called Beida fa bao, product of Peking University. It includes China laws, regulations, treaties, law literature, etc. from 1949. Though supposedly for Columbia users, it sometimes occurred that it was restricted to Law School members only. Because Starr Library and Law Library were not able to solve the issue for good, Butler Library authorities may be contacted to hopefully solve the access problem. - Chinese Civilization in Time and Space 中華文明之時空基礎架構
CCTS, or Zhonghua wen ming zhi shi kong ji chu kuang jia, from Academia Sinica, Taiwan. It features historical mapping, the Union Catalog of Local Gazetteers, and the public portion of Scripta Sinica of the Academia Sinica. Please note that the two CCTS access terminals formerly located in Starr Library have been removed as of 2010, due to the database's new accessibility online.

- Chinese Paper Gods 中國紙馬
Zhongguo zhi ma, a digitization project of the Goodrich collection of Rare/Special Collection of our library. It includes ephemera of popular faith, particularly selected woodblock prints of household gods from China during the 1920s and 1930s.
- Gu gong xian shang 故宮線上 NPM (National Palace Museum) Online
An art image database that includes tens of thousands of art objects from the National Palace Museum in Taiwan. Available through April 2011. - Nei ge da ku dang an 內閣大庫檔案 Grand secretariat archives
Grand Secretariat Archives is a database that contains documents originally housed in the storerooms of the Grand Secretariat of the Qing dynasty (1644-1912). After 1949 these documents were kept at the Institute of History and Philology of Academia Sinica. The entire archive contains about 310,000 items. The collection, dating from the Ming dynasty to the Qing dynasty (1368-1912), encompasses a wide variety of subjects. For full content coverage, see "Grand Secretariat Archives - Inventory and History of Preservation". Also, portions of the archives had been published under title: Ming Qing dang an.
