First Lieutenant Sigmund Deutsch, M.D., U.S. Army Medical Reserve Corps, was part of a group of 134 medics ordered by the president to report to Governors Island on April 15, 1917. Dr. Deutsch was still waiting to be deployed when he died at home in New York City at the age of forty-one.
