Lieutenant Commander John Burke, U.S. Navy, was killed on a flight from Noumea, New Caledonia to Guadalcanal, March 31, 1946. Lieutenant Commander Burke, who was 37 years old at the time of his death, was active in Republican politics, having run for the New York State Senate in 1936, and had served with the Coast Guard before enlisting in the Navy. He had been eligible for discharge but remained in service throughout the war.
