Lieutenant Joseph Arthur Porterfield, U.S. Army Air Forces, was reported killed in the Adriatic area of operations, December 19, 1944.
Tributes
March 4, 1946, his father wrote: "Joseph Arthur was killed over the Adriatic on December 8, 1943, having left Italy in a P-38, combat plane, to escort a fleet of heavy bombers on the way to Greece. He was declared dead on February 8, 1945, and awarded the Purple Heart on March 28, 1945." Listed as a 2nd Lt. on a list of WW II deaths.
