Lieutenant Alden Nelson Wood, 9th Air Force, U.S. Army Air Forces, was an aerial navigator serving in the Middle East. After successfully completing 33 missions, he was declared missing in action on July 4, 1943. Earlier that same year, he had been declared missing in action in North Africa after parachuting from a badly crippled plane. He and his companions returned to base after a four-day march through the desert. He had previously been awarded the Silver Star for gallantry and the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters.
