John Herbert Fields

Captain John Herbert Fields was a member of the 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was killed in action while fighting in South Korea on May 18, 1951. He was 34 years old. He had enlisted in the army in 1942, and had risen to the rank of First Lieutenant by the end of World War II. After having attended the School of Military Government at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, he was sent to Seoul, Korea in 1946. Captain Fields returned to the United States in 1949, but was ordered back to Korea in 1950. He was killed while defending a command post. In a letter, his commanding colonel described Captain Fields as having been "one of our best---cheerful, courageous and loyal."
