Harry Augustus Young

Harry Augustus Young, Quartermaster-Sergeant, Battery A, Utah Light Artillery, died on February 6, 1899, in battle, near Manila, in the Philippines, four years after he graduated from Columbia in Medicine. Young was a member of the Church of the Latter Day Saints and a nephew of the Mormon leader, Brigham Young. The LDS Church had been very divided about whether it was a good idea to send their men into battle, although eventually decided to allow members to enlist. Harry Augustus Young was among those who chose to enlist, and was killed in battle.
