John Giraud Agar, Jr.

First Lieutenant John Giraud Agar Jr., U.S. Army, died October 21, 1918, one day following an airplane accident in France while assigned to the 22nd Aero Squadron, U.S. Air Service. Lieutenant Agar had attended Princeton University, Class of 1914, and when he enlisted in the air service in 1917, he was enrolled in the Columbia University School of Physicians and Surgeons, Class of 1919. He attended ground school at Cornell University's School of Military Aeronautics and flight training at Selfridge Field, Michigan, and Mineola, Long Island. When he departed for France, he left behind a wife who later had a baby girl that he would never see. In January 1918, Agar completed his training at the Third Aviation Instruction Center (3rd AIC) near Issoudun, France. He joined the 22nd Pursuit Squadron on August 27, 1918 and completed at least two dozen combat patrols with the squadron before his death at age 25.
