Amabel Scharff Roberts, Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing, was the first American nurse to die in France in World War I. She died on January 17, 1918, at Base Hospital Number 2, run by Presbyterian Hospital, in Etretat, France, of blood poisoning while tending to wounded soldiers.
