James Vincent Shanley

Captain James Vincent Shanley, U.S. Marine Corps, was killed in action in the Pacific Theater on October 4, 1944. He received a Navy Cross for commanding a company of Marines in the fighting at Peleliu, which was presented posthumously in a ceremony held on South Field at Columbia's Morningside campus in August 1945. Captain Shanley's mother, Mrs. James G. Shanley, was in attendance. It was the second Navy Cross that Captain Shanley had received.
